The Quintessential Winter Cologne: Burberry London Review

If you ask fifty fragrance enthusiasts what the best winter cologne is, you'll get fifty different answers.

But if you ask them what the best representation of a winter fragrance is, Burberry London will be the overwhelming answer.

In just a few words, Burberry London is masculine, sophisticated, and elegant. The bottle design captures this perfectly.

If you're diversifying your fragrance rotation to include seasonal changes, Burberry London is a great place to start.

Burberry London Scent Profile

Burberry lists top notes of lavender, bergamot, and cinnamon. To my nose, these blend seamlessly as a superficial sniff reveals only evergreen and leather.

With the first spray of Burberry London, I detected a little “softness” which is likely the lavender. Within minutes it morphed into the smell of a lush evergreen forest.

I know my nose wasn't fooling me because the middle and base notes are woodsy scents, particularly oak moss (like a forest floor) and guaiac (a little smoky).

Overall, I'd say Burberry London throws evergreen notes right up front, followed closely by leather, and anchors the fragrance with an elusive tobacco leaf.

Burberry London Performance

The projection from Burberry London (how well others can smell it) is pretty good. It isn't overwhelming, but it will be apparent that you're wearing a wonderful scent.

After a few hours, this great scent does calm down quite a bit. Only those in your personal space will be able to smell it.

That's not the worst thing because when people get close enough to catch a hint, they'll be drawn in closer.

Every time I wear Burberry London, at the end of the day, my wife always comments on how great I smell.

You can reapply it in the middle of the day or when you get off work. Just grab a few refillable travel atomizers so you won't have to carry the bottle with you.

When to wear Burberry London

As the quintessential winter cologne, Burberry London is undoubtedly suited for cold weather.

The leather and evergreen notes are too heavy for heat and humidity, and perfectly compliment the freezing winter temperatures.

Burberry London is great for Autumn as well. Just make sure to wait until the temperature drops low enough to necessitate a jacket or a heavy sweater.

The mature scent makes Burberry London great for wearing in the classroom or office. You can also wear it at night, but reserve it for dinner or a movie and reach for something else when hitting the club.

Final thoughts

Burberry London projects maturity, making it the perfect fragrance for older gentlemen.

Young guys can also use this distinct, mature fragrance to set themselves apart from their peers who tend to reach for Axe body spray.

I enjoyed Burberry London as a young chap in my 20's, I'm loving it in my 30's, and I see myself pulling this out winter after winter for decades to come.

Nate – you are absolutely 100% bang on with this. I’ve used London as my only winter fragrance for the last few years. I’m in my late 40’s and to be honest I wouldn’t use it if I was in my 20’s, but that combination of leather / tobacco / cinnamon / tiny bit of smoke (I didn’t know that was guaiac, thanks) is easily the best and most balanced fragrance I’ve ever used, period. I love it, and women love it, and they don’t know why.

Great review mate, keep ’em coming.

It’s definitely a winner. Do you have any other dedicated seasonal fragrances?

I know I’ve sampled the Diesel scent you’re talking about but can’t remember it so I’ll have to revisit that one. In Red is completely new to me but I just read Chris’s review on it and will have to pick that one up as well. Thanks for the tips!

I’d like to give Burberry a try soon. I just ordered a bottle of John Varvatos Oud (due to your winter picks) and I’m anxious to try it out. Thanks for the great reviews and I’m really digging your blog! Keep it up 👍

Nailed it. This has been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember.

L’Occitane has a fragrance called Eau Des Baux that you might also appreciate. It has a similar woodsy/vanilla base, but with very spicy/peppery top notes. I like to think of it as a livelier weekday alternative to London, which I absolutely love, but find a tad too cozy for the office.

I went into Macy’s looking for it and was told London has been discontinued… 😭
