Best Tasting Protein Powder: 3 Delicious Recipes with Red Supplements Whey

best tasting protein powder

I eat a LOT of oats and whey, so I'm always on the lookout for the best tasting protein powder I can find.

I enjoy it so much that I frequently eat light throughout the day just so I can splurge on a massive 1,400-calorie plus bowl in the evening.

So when my shipment of Red Supplements Elite Whey Protein arrived in three neapolitan ice cream-inspired flavors (Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla), I first tried each out in shake form.

They turned out to be some of the best tasting protein powders I've ever had. Realizing the potential to elevate my oats and whey, I got to work on creating new recipes that would satisfy my hunger and my sweet tooth.

After a week in the “lab” and living almost exclusively on oats and whey, I've nailed down three of the best tasting protein powder and oatmeal recipes that you can try for yourself.

Mexican Hot Chocolate

I've found that adding a little heat to my chocolate oats and whey enhances the whole experience. Also, you get the added bonus of health benefits from the capsaicin. And the sweet, tiny marshmallows are the perfect complement to these rich, chocolate-y oats.

Ingredients

  • 60g rolled oats (3/4 cup dry)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 dash chili powder
  • 1 dash cayenne pepper
  • 1 scoop Chocolate Ice Cream Whey
  • 2 Tbsp Mallow Bits (only 5g carbs!)

Preparation

  1. Bring 1.5 cups water to a boil.
  2. Add oats, cinnamon, chili powder, and cayenne and simmer until thickened.
  3. In a serving bowl, mix whey with about an ounce of water to reconstitute. (This is the KEY to avoiding clumps!)
  4. Add cooked oats to serving bowl and stir to combine with your whey “syrup”.
  5. Unless you're dieting hard, top with Mallow Bits.

The only downside to this recipe is that it's so damn good you'll be sad when it's over. I found that when I emptied my bowl, I had to get busy working IMMEDIATELY to distract myself from heading back to the stove to make a second (much larger) bowl.

These marshmallows combined with the best tasting protein powder out there really is a dangerous combination.

(Straw)berry Cobbler

Start your day off with a bowl of southern hospitality. This combination of juicy berries, crunchy granola, hot oats, and creamy, sweet strawberry protein powder is hard to beat – especially when you consider that it's technically health food!

Ingredients

  • 60g rolled oats (3/4 cup dry)
  • 15g dried cherries
  • 15g dried blueberries
  • 1 scoop Strawberry Ice Cream Whey
  • Splash of milk or cream
  • 1/4 cup granola
  • 1 fresh strawberry, sliced

Preparation

  1. Bring 1.5 cups water to a boil.
  2. Add the oats and dried fruits, reduce to a simmer, and cook until thickened.
  3. In a serving bowl, mix whey with about an ounce of water to reconstitute. (This is the KEY to avoiding clumps!)
  4. Add cooked oats to serving bowl and stir to combine with your whey “syrup”.
  5. Top with a splash of milk or cream, granola, and strawberry slices.

To get a more pie filling-like texture, make sure you're cooking the dried berries with the oats to rehydrate them and spread the sweetness throughout. Also, try to ration your granola so that you get a bit of crunch in every bite.

Coconut Cream Pie

I was never a big dessert eater growing up, but after more than a decade with my wife and stealing a bite from her here and there, I get the itch for it pretty regularly.

But a quick review of the macros causes me to skip it all together as I realize that I can blow a good portion of my calories for the day on one dessert.

So for all my fellow strict dieters out there wanting a suitable alternative, it's important to look for the best tasting protein powder you can find so your meals function as a dessert replacement and not just another supplement you begrudgingly take.

This recipe combined with Red Supplements Elite Whey is the closest thing you're going to get to a real dessert while using foods that are actually good for you!

Ingredients

  • 60g rolled oats (3/4 cup dry)
  • 1/4 shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 2 Tbsp coconut milk (the kind in a can)
  • 1 scoop Vanilla Ice Cream Whey

Preparation

Toasted Coconut

You can buy pre-toasted coconut flakes, but doing it yourself is super easy and only takes a few minutes. I toast my own flakes to avoid having multiple bags of shredded coconut in my cabinet.

  1. Add half the shredded coconut (reserve half for mixing) to a pan on medium heat.
  2. Toast, stirring occasionally until it starts to brown and smells fragrant (only 2-3 minutes).
  3. That's all folks!

Oats

  1. Bring 1.5 cups water to a boil.
  2. Add oats and reduce to a simmer, cooking until thickened.
  3. In a serving bowl, mix whey with about an ounce of water to reconstitute. (This is the KEY to avoiding clumps!)
  4. Add cooked oats and remaining shredded coconut to serving bowl and stir to combine with your whey “syrup”.
  5. Top with coconut milk and toasted coconut.

The sweet vanilla from the whey and the creaminess from the coconut milk provide an excellent base, but the toasted coconut is what elevates it to “pie status.” Don't skip this step or you'll just have vanilla oats and whey.

The Best Tasting Protein Powder

In terms of quality, Red Supplements Elite Whey Protein is as good as you can get. It comes from grass fed dairy cows, is completely GMO free, uses only natural flavors, and is made in the USA.

And despite a short list of natural ingredients and being sweetened with stevia, this is some of the best tasting protein powder I've had. And considering the fact that I go through about 5 lbs a month, I've tried most of the major brands over the past 15 years.

It even tastes just as good as the “gourmet” brands loaded with hydrogenated oils, synthetic flavors, and corn syrup.

A word of caution.

I don't mean to pat myself on the back too hard, but these recipes combined with the best tasting protein powder you'll find are so good that you really will want to have something to do immediately after you finish eating.

If you don't occupy your mind or at least have a pot of black coffee ready to go, I can guarantee that you'll be back at the stove cooking up a second batch within a few minutes of finishing your first bowl.

Enjoy!

Hey Nate, I read your post “Oats and Whey: How to avoid clumps” sometime around October 2014 but I overlooked it completely back then for I never ate much oats. However I’d really like you to know that your recipe kept me away from dying out of hunger in Brazil haha.
I was there in June-July of 2015. I was at Sao Paulo in the last few days of my trip. I got some vanilla whey protein as I wanted to eat something healthy for breakfast and I wanted it hot(viral+sore throat). And out of nowhere your blogpost came to my mind. I straight away went through your website and ate the same damnn thing for 8 days. Thank you so much for that. I really mean it.
Ps- I also added Acai to it and I swear it tasted so good!

That’s excellent! Oats and whey really can be amazing. I frequently have it for my “cheat meal.” It’s the same thing I eat for breakfast just more of it, haha. I’ll pick up some acai berries next time I’m at the market and give it a try. Thanks for the tip!

    Awesome website. !!
I started trt 100 mg a week. I’ve been on it for 6 weeks. I read the blog but wanted to know when did you notice the fat burning or muscle building. I’m aware it’s not a high amount or a anabolic like dianabol but I’ve noticed a little better recovery and just wanted to know if there ever was a moment where it was more dramatic. I also wanted to know how you got so lean. If there is a sample of what you ate on the website.
    Thanks
    Keith

The muscle gains came slowly over the first year or so. To get lean, I just consistently eat a little below maintenance. When my weight loss stalls, I cut another few hundred calories and keep going. I wish I could tell you that there was a secret to it but there isn’t. Consistently eat below maintenance and you’ll lose weight.
