Until last fall, I was an every-other-day shave kind of guy.
But growing out my beard over last winter made me recognize the importance of having a good routine and products to keep my beard looking and feeling its best.
Previously, I wrote about my beard care routine, but I didn’t get into product specifics.
After spending a month with Beardbrand’s complete line in their Spiced Citrus scent, I’m ready to let you know how they’ve been working for me.
Here’s my experience with Beardbrand’s full line of products.
After attending a Beard Competition in 2012, Beardbrand founder Eric Bandholz fell in love with the bearded lifestyle.
Along with his newfound kinship, he also identified a lack of quality beard care products.
Upon returning from the competition, he set to work building a community of beardsmen and was soon contacted by a New York Times reporter requesting his expertise in the realm of beard care.
Eric and his co-founders used the release of the story as a catalyst for their business.
They bootstrapped a store (which launched the day before the story was published) with only $30 and a commitment from a vendor.
Then came Eric’s appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank, which brought Beardbrand to the greater public’s attention. Today, Beardbrand offers one of the most successful beard-centric product lines out there.
A main goal of the company is to “end the negative stereotypes about beardsmen being lazy or unkempt.”
I obviously agree with their mission, but what about their products?
Beardbrand Spiced Citrus Scent
In a word: Christmas.
Open one of these products and you’re instantly greeted by clove and citrus, with the clove taking center stage.
After the fragrance dries down, most of the citrus fades and you’re left with the spicy notes.
While I think I would enjoy more citrus on the front end (maybe in sweet orange or bergamot), I love the warm, subtle spice that follows me throughout the day.

One look at the packaging and you know that Beardbrand isn’t about luring unsuspecting customers in with flashy packaging and marketing buzz-words.
They let the products speak for themselves.
The logo and product labels are simple and masculine, which is perfect since I tend to turn away from products that look like they’re trying too hard.
All of the containers are high quality, convenient to use, and don’t leak when traveling.
Beardbrand Spiced Citrus Beard Wash
So much better than bar soap.
My beard is very coarse and curly. It quickly becomes a tangled mess if it gets dried out.
The Beardbrand beard wash does a great job of making my face and beard feel clean without the dry, “crunchy” texture that results from using soap.
However, since this product is designed to be gentle on your face and beard, it doesn’t have quite the same foaming action as a typical shampoo.
TIP: If a thick lather is on your must-have list, I’ve found that using slightly more product than recommended will produce ample suds.
Beardbrand Beard Softener
I don’t use this product every day in the interest of saving time in the morning, but I can definitely tell a difference when I do.
Even though the beard wash doesn’t dry my beard out, it’s a luxurious feeling to follow up with a beard softener once or twice a week to give my beard extra moisture and softness.
TIP: I like to wash my beard first in the shower, then immediately apply the softener and leave in until just before getting out. I don’t know if leaving it in longer makes it work any better, but at least I get to spend more time with the awesome scent.
Beardbrand Beard Oil
In my opinion, this is the most important step of beard care.
The beard oil comes in a convenient glass dropper bottle. Just turn it upside down and tap the bottom with your finger to dispense the product.
And since you only use a few drops at a time, this 1 oz bottle will last quite a while even with daily use.
If I were to simply wash and dry my beard, I wouldn’t be able to get a comb through it. This beard oil conditions and lubricates the hairs enough that I can easily comb through and shape it how I please.
Further, this lightweight oil makes my beard feel softer and gives it a pleasant sheen, without looking greasy.
Did I mention it smells amazing?
Beardbrand Spiced Citrus Mustache Wax
Beardbrand’s mustache wax comes in a container similar to lip balm, making it easy to carry and dispense.
The main components of the wax are beeswax and lanolin, which provide a flexible, medium hold.
One of the biggest advantages of a pliable hold wax, such as this, is that it can be reworked throughout the day and you’ll never end up with dry flakes.
I’m a fan of high-hold styles for my mustache, so I typically use Layrite Super Hold.
Despite performing very well as a medium hold wax, I’ve found that a fairly high hold can be achieved by using more wax.
I should note that the mustache wax, although the same scent, has a slightly different aroma than the rest of the line due to its beeswax base.
The inherent sweetness of the beeswax, combined with the spice from the clove, creates an intoxicating aroma that, to me, smells like fresh, sweet pipe tobacco – one of my favorite smells in the world.
TIP: To avoid clumps, I’ve found that it’s best to apply in several light coats, rather than one heavy application.
Do I recommend Beardbrand products?
If you want your beard to look healthy and attractive, it’s going to require some upkeep and care (just like the hair on your head).
Previously, I was using various carrier oils (sweet almond, argan, and castor) on my beard, and was styling my mustache exclusively with hair pomade.
While they did an OK job, I hadn’t realized how much my beard wasn’t living up to its potential until I started using the Beardbrand line.
As soon as I started using these products, my beard felt softer, was more manageable, and began sporting a healthy sheen.
Beyond just making your facial hair look better, I feel like it’s satisfying to get the full experience of maintaining a lush, well-tended beard and mustache.
Incorporating these products into my routine has been a welcome indulgence and they make the mundane task of showering more of a ritual than a chore.
